10 Primers on Understanding the ASEAN
Posted:  February 14, 2008   04:46:39pm

As the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN) moves forward in its pursuit of a regionally integrated, caring, and sharing South East Asian community, the South East Asian Committee for Advocacy (SEACA) continues to build the capacities of the region’s stakeholders who ought to be the ultimate beneficiaries of the fruits of this regional integration project. SEACA firmly believes that the promise of a vibrant and responsive ASEAN rests not only in the vision and dictates of the governments and heads of state – much of this promise lies in the ASEAN peoples’ understanding and support of the organization’s development roadmap.

SEACA offers this Primers Series, Understanding the ASEAN: Building the ASEAN People’s Capacity to Engage a Truly People-centered ASEAN, as a humble contribution to civil society’s efforts of bringing the ASEAN closer to its people. It is hoped that a better understanding of the ASEAN, as both region and organization, inspires the people of the region to fully participate and engage in regional affairs that affect their quality of life. In like manner, it is hoped that better-informed and actively engaged people encourage the ASEAN governments and heads of state to consider the people’s needs and best interests at all times, and to be held accountable to decisions and agreements made in their name.

Understanding the ASEAN: Building the ASEAN People’s Capacity to Engage a Truly People-centered ASEAN is a 10-primer packet focusing on the following topics:

ASEAN: Association of South East Asian Nations
The ASEAN Now
Civil Society Engagements with the ASEAN
Engaging the Drafting of the ASEAN Charter
Comparative Analysis of the ASEAN Charter Blueprint and the SAPA Submissions on the 3 Pillars
Regional Integration Project
ASEAN Engagements and Negotiations
Human Rights and the ASEAN
Migration and the Rights of Migrants in ASEAN
Environment and the ASEAN

This 10-primer series is co-written by Arturo C. Nuera and Eltheodon R. Rillorta, and it features 100 ASEAN-inspired illustrations by Jeric B. Sadullo.
